Trendy Trimmings...

My goodness it's been forever since my last post. Work has somehow consumed my life... and when I get home I just can't bring myself to draw. Hopefully after the holidays, life will slow down a bit!

Speaking of work though, part of my job involves researching seasonal trend direction for trims. This means a trip to one of the best places I know of for bling buttons, beaded lace, and just about anything you could ever dream of... M & J Trimming on sixth avenue.

They have some of the most beautiful buttons. It makes me want to change all the trimmings on my winter coats to fancy metal crests and transform my plain cardigans with sparkles and pearls. If you're ever in need of some inspiration, just take a trip to M & J! Have a good Sunday everyone =) I really do hope to be around more often. I miss you all!

Sweet Treat...

Just a quick little post before I finish packing. Tomorrow I'm off to the airport to fly home for the holiday. I cant wait to stuff myself full of mom's great food! What's your favorite Thanksgiving day treat? I do love a good slice of pie =) Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Gem Envy...

I found this stunning brooch during a search for vintage jewels on Etsy. I love looking through the tons of old baubles and beads online. This one would look amazing on a velvet blazer or plaid coat!

I'll be the first to admit, this past month has been rough. I haven't been very inspired lately and have been working so much that I don't really have much time to get inspired... it's a vicious, vicious circle. But since it's up to me to keep going, I decided to plop myself in my little studio today and start drawing.

And I discovered that I really like drawing pretty jewels! It's a challenge to capture all the facets and sparkles but I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. I hope you have a creative week... almost time to travel home for Thanksgiving. I could really go for some hot cider and my mom's delicious corn tortilla soup. So yummy!

Wednesday Wishlist...

The weather is getting chilly here in NYC and it's making me want to bundle up in cozy sweaters. Yesterday the BF and I went ice skating at Rockefeller Center... part of our staycation. We both needed a break from work and decided to spend the week doing all those New York City things that we never have time for. It's been so relaxing just staying home, sleeping in, and wandering around the city.

I'm still looking for the perfect pair of new boots. I'll hopefully be able to try these on in the store tomorrow to see if they fit. This cozy fair isle sweater looks toasty warm, and it's already cold enough to sport a pair of glittens! Even though I'm sad that fall only seemed to last a week (we had snow last Saturday!!!) I am excited that peppermint hot chocolate is back at Starbucks. I had my first of the season yesterday. =) Stay warm and have a good rest of your week!

Happy Halloween...

Halloween is just as big as New Year's Eve here in NYC. Everyone dresses up and on the subway you could see Harry Potter, five Treasure Trolls, and the entire Mario Kart gang in one car. I was the last to leave work late Friday night and passed a zombie entering the building on my way out the door... you just never know here.

In celebration of this crazy holiday, I decided to finally get some drawing time in. Have a safe and happy Halloween everyone and I promise to be around more often... the BF and I have planned a 'staycation' for the next week. Yay!

Friendship Bracelets...

Friendship bracelets are officially a part of my life again. In exchange for her shoe drawing, my dear coworker gifted me a beautiful handmade friendship bracelet complete with rhinestone trim. It was such a surprise considering I've had my eye on them for awhile now but she had no idea. Coincidence is such a funny thing!

The backstory...

It all started a few months ago on my last trip home. I spotted them outside a little boutique and they were so bright and cheerful. We used to make them all the time as kids and the thought of wearing one again made me kind of nostalgic.

I saw them again when Meagan and I were out window shopping. Only these were more sophisticated than the bracelets I remember making... they were intertwined with sparkly rhinestones and dainty gold chains.

And I wanted one even more after seeing them on the fashionable wrist of my favorite personal style blogger. After a little research, I found a great DIY tutorial...

Long story short, these colorful handwoven bracelets have slowly made their way back to me. And now I want to make more! Time for a crafty project =) Have a good week everyone!

Miu Miu Love...

Every season there are a few "it" accessories that grace the page of every fashion magazine. I think I first saw these shoes in Vogue and then later in a window at Bergdorf's. They are so sparkly and so much fun!

However, since they are no less than $890 (yikes!) I offered to sketch the infamous Miu Miu bootie after my coworker protested how much she loved them. Turning a shoe into art I guess is the next best thing to owning a pair... sometimes a picture will just have to do =) I hope you like!

Christmas in October...

My goodness it's been awhile since my last post! The past week and a half completely wiped me out. I was definitely in need of a lazy weekend. But I have to keep drawing and posting because it makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something for myself. So here goes...

Last Christmas my mom gave me the pair of Hunter wellies I had been wanting ever since I moved to the city. Unfortunately the boots arrived defective and I had to send them back. But she said I could pick out a new pair the next time I was at the store and she would pay me back. Over nine months later I finally make it to Bloomingdales intent on a new pair of rain boots.

And here they are... glossy and new, ready for the elements! If this winter is anything like the last, I'll be prepared =) Have a good start to your week!

Blogger Inspired...

Have you seen Kimberly's blog Eat Sleep Wear? I just discovered it a couple weeks ago and am now a follower. She is so adorable and makes glasses look really really chic. I loved one of her Fashion Week looks so much I had to put pencil to paper!

There are so many personal style blogs out there, it's sometimes hard invest in any particular one. But how inspiring to see someone who stays true to her own aesthetic! While I'm still working on my 'perfect' wardrobe, reading blogs like these makes me want to care more about what I put on in the morning =)

I hope you have a happy week!

Wednesday Wishlist...

I'll be honest, this post isn't entirely a wish list... I bought these red pants this past weekend...my first official fall purchase! Now I just need the top and bag to go with =) I've been thinking about red pants ever since I saw this chic look in Elle. Luckily I found this more affordable version at Express. They fit great and I can't wait to complete the outfit.

This weekend my Dad is coming to visit and I'm looking forward to some quality family time. The BF is going to cook a special vegan dinner and hopefully the weather will be perfect so we can spend the day out and about experiencing the city.

I hope you have a lovely rest of your week, Friday's almost here!

Confident Red...

Do you wear lipstick? I'm more of a lip gloss person but there's something so confident about a woman with red lipstick. This past weekend I finally went through my makeup cases and threw out half of what I owned. Some of it was so old, I have a tendency to keep things forever!

It's nice to see what I have now, the BF put up an extra shelf in the bathroom for all my 'stuff'. It's a bit girly but I like being able to see my nail polish all lined up and sorted by color. Such a silly thing, but it helps me maintain a sense of order. When I don't know where my life is going or what I want to do with myself, those little things do make a difference. I hope everyone has a productive week! It's only Monday and I'm ready for the weekend...

Loafer Love...

They're popping up everywhere and it's kind of making me want a pair. These fabulous loafers are glitzy but there are so many different patterns and textures out there I don't know if I could choose! I'll make this post short and sweet as it's late on a Sunday night and I really should get some sleep. We spent the majority of our day cleaning the apartment so I'm spent. I did however, make my first wardrobe purchase of the fall season this weekend... I love them so much I might just have to draw them! Have a good week everyone =)

Happy Fall Fashion Week...

Happy fall fashion week everyone! Is it too early for booties and tights? I can't wait until the cool weather sets in and I can start wearing sweaters =) It's been awhile since my last post, I had an exhausting but exciting week. I was able to attend some amazing events to kick off the new fashion season. Thursday September 8th was Fashion's Night Out. It's always fun to be out and about in New York City on FNO. After work I headed over to Lord & Taylor to see the lovely Meagan of Travel Write Draw sketch fashion portraits for a crowd of onlookers. She was busy drawing but I was able to steal her away to snap a quick pic of us both.

Then on Friday, I attended the first ever Blogger's Night Out hosted by these lovely ladies at Pranna on Madison Avenue. I had no idea what to expect and was so impressed: free drinks, giveaways, swag bags, and an infinite number of fabulously dressed fashion bloggers! The pictures I took didn't turn out so great, but I think Meagan was able to capture the moment. Look out for more pictures on her blog!

Anyways, I had a great time and am so glad I went. Thanks so much, Meagan for going with me. I feel very fortunate to have met someone so kind, inspiring, and talented! I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend =)

*Edit* Just found a video of Blogger's Night Out! Check it out here!

Southern Belle...

I have been meaning to go see The Help since it came out. Yesterday was the last summer friday of the year so the BF and I left work and walked to Kips Bay to see a matinée. What a touching, beautiful, and charmingly funny film! After a little research this morning, I learned the costumes were designed by Sharen Davis, you can read more about her here.

I love the silhouettes of the 1960's era so much, one of my favorite dresses has a full skirt and nipped in waist. The beautiful frocks pictured above are available at Modcloth. The designer of the first two dresses, Eva Franco, happens to have a beautiful blog as well! I love learning more about up and coming designers and seeing what makes them tick.

To find the dresses that inspired the sketches:
1. Pop Goes the Easel Dress by Eva Franco
2. Dice as Nice Dress by Eva Franco
3. Frock Band Dress by BB Dakota

I hope everyone has a nice Labor Day weekend... time to soak up some of those last summer rays!

Surprise Feature...

Yesterday I came home from work to a wonderful surprise: the lovely Dot, author of Scraps, had featured my work! She wrote such kind words, I am so grateful and honored to be among her curated collection of favorite things. Everyone be sure to check out her blog!

The week is half way over and I can hardly wait for the upcoming three day weekend. Some much needed relaxing and macaroon munching will ensue... have a happy rest of your week =)

Macarons Anyone...

The Upper East Side is a little sweeter, a bit fancier, and a lot more colorful thanks to the new Ladurée sweet shop that opened today on Madison Avenue between 71st & 72nd. Being that it's only a short walk from my apartment, I'll have to contain myself. But it certainly can't hurt to window gaze! The store is absolutely beautiful after studying these photos on StyleList. I know what I'll be doing this weekend!

p.s. This post is dedicated to the lovely Meagan of Travel Write Draw... a true LadurĂ©e enthusiast =)

p.p.s. The girl in photo #10 is wearing a pink version of my coveted bag!!

Blogger Re - Inspired ...

This weekend was a total washout, literally. As hurricane Irene made her way up the east coast I was glued to every news station watching and waiting. We had prepared ahead of time in case we lost power and stockpiled water and food in case of emergency but nothing really happened. And I was so prepared! Slightly disappointing.

This feeling invaded my mood and I haven't been inspired to draw much of anything recently. I guess that's okay but today I just couldn't take it. It's been over a week since my last post which is unacceptable!

I can always count on my favorite fashion blogs to inspire some sketching. I've already featured Blair Edie of Atlantic-Pacific before, but her outfits are just so amazing I had to draw her again. Hopefully this week of beautiful weather will cheer me up and get me thinking about fall again. How excited is everyone for Fashion Week?!

Mesmerized...

Yesterday, I painted my nails with this lovely shade of blue. For some reason I can't stay away from the nail polish aisle. I just love looking at all those glossy, pretty, colors. I've been eyeing Essie's "Mezmerised" for a couple weeks now... I usually stick to reds and pinks but there was just something about that color! Turns out I have a marker in that exact shade so it must be fate.

It's the start of a new week and I'm craving some fall inspiration. I've already starting thinking about my potential purchases for the new season. With a limited budget, I put a lot of thought into new wardrobe additions... mood boards are involved. =)

I hope everyone has a great week, let's hope for cool weather and a healthy dose of sunshine!

Corner Studio...

At last, my own space. Here's a peak into my apartment and little studio that has taken over one corner in our living room. My goal was to create a fresh, clean space that would make me want to sit down and draw. It's nice and sunny by the window which provides great natural light for drawing. The fashion illustrations on the wall are from my previous street fair purchase... yes it's taken me this long to find a place for them!

I picked up this octagonal glass container at Housing Works and it's the perfect size to house all my markers. It's so nice to see all my colors at once instead of digging through a drawer to find the perfect color. I've started to collect vintage biscuit tins which happen to be great for hiding extra drawing supplies that don't have a home. I love that this one has little feet. I'm still in the market for a tray to keep my erasers and pencil sharpener... perhaps I'll save up for one of these. So that's my new studio, I hope you like it... back to the drawing board for me!

Fancy Flats...

I spend a lot of time drawing high heeled shoes... but the truth is I never wear them! I'm more in favor of ballet flats, and these lovelies from Anthropologie are a delight to gaze at. The most recent catalog is complete eye candy, you should definitely pick up a copy!

This weekend, I'm journeying home to Maryland one last time. My parents have finally sold my childhood home and it makes me so sad. While I'm happy that they have moved on and have built a beautiful house near the water in Virginia, a piece of me knows I'll never be able to go "home" again and I'm feeling awfully anxious about the trip.

I really hope by the time I come back to the city, I'll feel some sort of closure and be at peace with the whole thing. But until then, all I can think about is going home...

For the Love of J.Crew...

I have a special place in my heart for J.Crew, if you can't already tell from my previous posts. They were the first to hire me after graduating from design school when the economy had just tanked and there were no jobs for recent grads with little experience. I was eventually taken under the wing of the visual merchandiser at the collection boutique on Madison Avenue and learned the in's and out's of store displays. I learned so much during my time there, met some amazing people, and acquired a skill set that even comes in handy as an assistant designer.

This morning I was up bright and early searching the web and came across a recent announcement that made me so proud: J.Crew will be debuting a runway show this fall at Fashion Week! I can't wait to see what Jenna Lyons and Marissa Webb have in store for us.

So I think I've gushed enough. This has definitely made me start thinking about Fall Fashion Week and Fashion's Night Out... and wearing tights... and boots... and lovely scarves... and wool peacoats. I. Love. Fall.

Have a relaxing Sunday!

Blogger Inspired...

The newest edition to my 'chic reads' link list is none other than Blair Edie's beautiful blog, Atlantic-Pacific. I love her stunning collection of sunnies and bangles, charming dresses, and signature bouffant.

Her dress in this post is gorgeous. The detail is amazing, I would snatch one up for myself if I had somewhere fancy to go!

There are so many blogs out there, I'm discovering new favorites everyday. It's a great way to get inspired, I nearly always find something that makes me want to draw.

I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend. I'm going out for a walk in Central Park with the BF to enjoy this lovely NYC weather and then I'll be working on the studio!

Wednesday Wishlist...

It's the height of summer and all I can think about are bright colors and keeping cool. Milly makes an incredibly cute skirt that I've been pining after for awhile now. Throw in a pair of ballet flats and a ladylike satchel and I'm sold!

I'm proud to say that this sketch was created in my new make-shift studio on an actual (gasp!) desk. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to have a designated drawing space. Just a few more finishing touches and I'll reveal my project!

I hope everyone has a lovely week. It's been a bit quiet in the blogosphere... perhaps we're all too hot to type! Stay cool and happy August =)

Fantasy Shoe...

Inspired by the many amazing sketches of Manolo Blahnik from my previous post, here's my own fantasy shoe. Sparkly and feathered and sky high... oh my! I hope you like...

Today, the BF was sitting at his nice desk/computer area while I was on the couch trying to draw on a not so flat surface in my lap when it occurred to me: this is not working. I've been thinking about rearranging the apartment to accommodate a little studio. In NYC it's a crime not to utilize every inch of space in your apartment and there's an unused corner in the living room I've had my eye on for awhile.

If I'm going to take myself seriously, I should at least allow myself a sturdy drawing surface and some decent light. Perhaps I'll tackle this little project next weekend. Until then... more couch drawings for me! Where do you create your fabulous artwork? Do you have a studio space? I'd love to know where everyone creates their masterpieces, do tell!

Happy creating!

Manolo's Sketchbook...

It's always interesting to discover designer illustrations, whether they be working sketches or works of art. A friend recently bequeathed this fabulous book to me (one less thing for her to move to a new apartment). Lucky me! It is full of Manolo Blahnik's most imaginative shoe drawings paired with insightful commentary from Anna Wintour, Kate Moss, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Needless to say, I'm eager to get drawing... stay tuned!

Closet Envy...

There are so many fashionable bloggers out there with seemingly infinite wardrobes. I'm amazed by the 'costumes' created daily by Kelly and Denni. It must be so fun to get dressed in the morning when you have all those fancy things hanging in your closet!

To be honest, I've been having a bit of artist's block these days. I could really use a good assignment. It was so nice to have that framework in school to build from. I'm trying to keep up with my drawing in the hopes of getting better at it but I keep hitting a wall. What should I be drawing? How should I be drawing? Who am I drawing for?

I've always been the one with a plan, checking off the steps to get to my goal. But what happens when your goals change? Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself and I should just be patient. After all, I've only been steadily blogging for six weeks.

Until I find some answers for myself, I know I have to keep drawing... anything. I think it's time to open that big book of inspiration! Have a good week...

Chic Shorts...

How cute are these shorts? It's been so hot in NYC lately, which makes dressing work appropriate a tad tricky. You know it's hot when the streets are literally melting and you're dodging tacky tar spots in your wedges! Luckily our office building is subzero inside and we're always wearing last season's sweater samples to keep warm.

This weekend I'm blocking out time to sketch all tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it as I haven't really drawn much of anything this week. The days seem to go by so quickly and before I know it, the weekend is here and I realize I haven't updated my blog. Yikes! Time to play catch up... have a relaxing Saturday!

Inspiration Organization...

I'm a huge fan of fashion magazines. I love them for their glossy pages, beautiful editorials, colorful advertisements, and of course reference images for my illustrations. In design school, we were taught to collect magazine tears religiously, which I thought was great because I already had a massive collection of fashion magazines I had been hanging onto since high school. But magazines are heavy and take up a lot of room (especially 5 years worth of them) so now I go through collective purging when they start to take up too much space in our little NYC apartment. I've been meaning to take all those tears and organize them somehow but the task seemed so daunting. Over the past four weekends, I've been working on this project a little at a time. Over 300 cellophane sleeves later, I have my book and I am so thrilled at how easy and wonderful it is to flip through and get inspired. Here's how to make your own:

Step 1: Gather a collection of your favorite magazines.
Step 2: Flip through and pull tears of your favorite images, products, clothes, editorials-- anything that catches your fancy and makes you happy
Step 3: Trim the edges so that each page will fit nicely in a cellophane plastic sleeve
Step 4: Slide your tears into a protective sleeve and organize them in a binder however best suits your creative method. I like to arrange my images in two page spreads that relate to one another by color, theme, mood, etc.

Once you're finished, you've not only organized that messy notebook/folder/pile of loose pages that's been hanging around, you've created the best magazine ever, curated by you! Now if you're ever feeling uninspired, lost, confused, and unable to find your voice, open this book and it will be full of everything that you find to be beautiful. Think of it as a bible of your personal aesthetic. Enjoy!

p.s. Doesn't Emma Watson look beautiful on Vogue's July cover? I may just have to draw that...
p.p.s. Please feel free to follow my blog with Bloglovin!

Needing Some Neon...

I have a new obsession. It all started on my lunch break about a week ago. I saw a bag that was impossible not to notice. It was highlighter yellow on the arm of a girl leaving my office building. I'm way too shy to approach a complete stranger so instead I went home and Googled. Little did I know, the blogosphere was already on it! The Cambridge Satchel company based in Great Britain makes these fabulously colorful leather classics. I want one. Until I save enough money to buy my own, here's a sketch of my coveted bag. Right now I'm pining after the orange one...

City Dogs...

There are so many dog lovers in New York City! It's always a treat to spot a pug on my way to work in the morning. I'm more a cat person, but I think if I ever got a dog, it would be a pug... or a french bulldog. There's something about those face wrinkles!

I fully plan on having a productive week and drawing as much as possible. I'm super excited for vacation over July 4th weekend. I'll be getting in some much needed family time. But until then... back to the drawing board. Have a good week, everyone!

Flower Girl...

Yesterday I finally went to the Met and saw the much talked about Alexander McQueen exhibit. It was incredibly inspiring and worth the long wait in line that seemed to wrap around the whole second floor of the museum! There were so many things to look at it was hard to take it all in but I absorbed as much as possible. What really struck a chord -- the fantastical headwear. Here is my own version... it was fun to create and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I guess I just needed to get out of my apartment and take in a dose of New York City to get inspired.

Face Study...

I've been drawing most of the afternoon and evening. I would show you what I was working on the majority of my day except that I went too far and ruined it. So frustrating. I think that's one of the hardest things to learn as an artist: when to stop. I took a moment and went back to the drawing board, literally. Here's a quick 'face' study I drew to make myself feel better. I hope you like! Tomorrow's a new day, I'll rummage through my inspiration images and pick something fun to work on.

P.S. Does any one use Pinterest? It's like Etsy treasuries only with any image on the web. So addicting!

Birthday Surprise...

Our new intern at work has a birthday tomorrow and we're going to celebrate. Here's a fun party shoe I drew for her card. I hope she likes it!

This weekend I promise to share more sketches (and make up for the past two days without posts). I've decided that a sketch a day is pretty ambitious-- especially when I don't plan ahead and come home scrambling to draw something. Until I'm good enough to whip up something fabulous in a hot minute, I'll stick to taking my time. Have a happy friday!

White Hot...

There's something undeniably cool about aviators. I bought my first pair the weekend before last. I have to admit I was a little intimidated, do I look ridiculous? The BF always looks so cool in his. In keeping with my sketch a day, here is my post at 11:54 pm. I'm exhausted and ready for bed but I had to draw something today or I couldn't live with myself. We'll see how long this lasts...

Beach Bound...

I'm looking forward to this 4th of July because I'm taking five days and going with the BF to visit my family in Ophelia, VA. We're making a point of it to go to the beach at least for the day and I can't wait to sit in the sunshine. I've been looking for a new suit and this one from J.Crew makes me happy.

A Sketch a Day...

I finally sat down today and drew. It was nice and frustrating at the same time... it takes me awhile to get back into the groove. I've been meaning to freshen up my website for awhile now and decided to feature my newest girl on my home page. She's sporting a sparkly dress and retro shades! The site isn't exactly how I want it yet (it never is) but this at least reflects the idea of where I want to go with it.

I've been longing for my school days in fashion drawing class where two and a half hours of my day were devoted to sketching. I miss being challenged-- by my classmates, my professor, and myself, really. I know I can't get better if I don't keep drawing but it's so hard to come home after a nine hour day at work and sketch. Maybe if I make it a point to draw something - anything - every day I'll catch the 'bug' again and take off with it. So here's to a sketch a day...

Street Fair Illustration Finds...

I love a good street fair... but after going to a few of them you start to notice they all have the same stuff. Not this one! I was in Soho awhile back after visiting the John Derian store and decided to detour and check out some of the vendors. I got really excited when I saw old advertisements from The New Yorker for sale from the 40's, 50's and 60's. Before photography was deemed a more effective advertising tool, illustration reigned.

I bought two and have yet to find the perfect spot for them on my wall. When I finally decide where to put them, I'll post a pic!

The Hillwood Museum...

If you're in the D.C. area and love French Rococo interiors, you must visit the Hillwood Museum. It's an estate formerly owned by the late heiress and avid art collector Marjorie Merriweather Post. This place is full of treasures, I could spend a whole week there. It's such a feast for the eyes, I have to go back. A couple years ago I went with my mom on a guided tour while I was home and fell in love with Majorie's vast collection of French and Russian decorative art. Just being there made me want to spend my days in a fancy gown sipping tea and admiring Faberge eggs. Alas, I have to work for a living but I can still watch the mini documentary now posted of the Hillwood Museum website. Enjoy!

Paper Fashion...

While flipping through the most recent online issue of Lonny Magazine this morning, I came across an advertisement for a costume exhibition and had to know more. I love all things relating to the 16th and 18th centuries, specifically the royal families of Queen Elizabeth and Marie Antoinette. After following the link to the Legion of Honor website, a fine arts museum in San Francisco (darn!) I learned that each piece is made entirely of paper. Amazing! It's too bad the exhibit isn't here, in NYC. I'd be there in a heartbeat!
